Health Anxiety Course

Course Information

Health anxiety is typified by feeling overly anxious about having or developing serious illnesses or diseases, and is also known as illness anxiety disorder. While people who have high levels of health anxiety are sometimes labelled hypochondriacs, this term does a disservice to those who suffer this serious and debilitating condition.

If you have high levels of health anxiety, you may experience the following symptoms:

  • Feeling anxious and afraid that you have a serious disease that doctors have not been able to diagnose.
  • Uncontrollable worry about your physical symptoms.
  • Checking your body frequently for signs or illness.
  • Focusing excessively on your body and physical symptoms.
  • Frequently seeking reassurance about your health from friends, family, and doctors.
  • Avoiding conversations, places, people, activities that remind you of your worries about illness.
  • Avoiding conversations, places, people, activities that remind you of your worries about illness.

Health anxiety is treatable. There are many research trials around the world that show cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) to be an effective treatment for people who worry excessively about their health. CBT works by teaching you how to identify your own patterns of anxiety, and developing your confidence in your ability to manage your symptoms. We have developed our new online program so that more people can access effective treatment.

Who will find this course useful?

This program is designed for people who are excessively worried that they might either have or will develop a serious disease.

Course duration

This course is self paced, but is designed to be completed within 3 months, at most. We recommend completing one lesson every week. Upon completion of the course, you will be granted an extra 12 months access for practice purposes. Please note, there is a 5-day lockout period between lessons to encourage the revision of material.

How much will it cost?

The course cost A$59.

What type of support will I receive?

The amount of support you receive will depend on the way you choose to do this course. If your clinician – doctor or psychologist – prescribes it, they will provide support for the duration of the course. If you do the self-help course, there is no external support available, as these delivery methods are designed to enhance self-reliance. However, provided you complete all six lessons, the results will be as good for self-help courses as with supervision.

How is the course structured?

Online Questionnaires

Our online questionnaires help to establish how you are feeling. Results from the questionnaires are then relayed back to your clinician after each lesson. If you are undertaking a self-guided course, you will be notified by THIS WAY UP if your scores are above the acceptable range.

Comic-Based Stories

Our lessons are in a comic based format, where you can follow the journey of a character as they learn practical skills to combat anxiety and depression. They also learn how to maintain these skills, manage and reduce difficulties, and prevent symptoms from returning.

Download our summaries and activities to reinforce what you learnt in each lesson.
